Until 31st January BBC Launches Search For New Disabled Presenters
BBC Vision has launched a nationwide search for new disabled presenting talent to be offered a unique training opportunity with the BBC. Established BBC schemes such as Extend and ManageAble develop the careers of off-screen talent in the media and now, PresentAble will focus efforts on discovering and developing new presenters with disabilities. 3rd - 30th January deafPLUS Mobile Advisory Service
deafPLUS provides a free and confidential service to all those who are deaf or hard of hearing, including equipment demonstration, information on lip reading classes, deaf clubs and much more. Latest venue list for Surrey and Hampshire (in PDF format).
 
14th January Personalisation Workshop - Redhill (in PDF format)
Mencap East Surrey are running a workshop to explain what ‘personalisation’ is all about and how will it affect your family. The event will be held at The Harlequin Theatre, Redhill from 1.30pm – 3.30pm with a free sandwich lunch at 1.00 pm. Please fill in a booking form if you would like to attend.

9th February Supporting Individuals with Mental Health Issues - Oxted (in PDF format)
Tandridge Voluntary Service Council are running a half day course aimed at those people who have little or no previous training in mental health, but who may, as part of their work or as a volunteer, come into contact with people suffering from mental health problems. The course will be held at the TVSC Meeting Room, Oxted from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
 
27th February Communication Skills – Listening & Body Language - Oxted (in PDF format)
Tandridge Voluntary Service Council are running a half day course is designed to support improvement in our communication skills from active listening to effective speaking. It will focus on all the resources we have from the words we select, the tone we apply and most importantly, the body language we use. It is aimed at people who would like to develop a more confident and inspirational style of communication. The course will be held at the TVSC Meeting Room, Oxted from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
 
12th & 13th March Mental Health in Balance - Woking (in PDF format)
Two mornings focusing on mental health for anyone who supports people in the Community. Presentations and workshops by professionals who work with those with mental health issues. Join in for one day or both at Christ Church, Town Square, Woking from 9:30am to 1:30pm.
 
17th March Mental Health & the Local Church - Epsom
What a local Church can do: Mental Illness and what to look out for, where to go for help, how to walk alongside someone with mental health issues, responding to people’s needs in church, setting up a drop in pitfalls and joy. Ongoing Surrey Events
Stroke Workshops Across Surrey (in PDF format)
The Stroke Association is piloting a scheme to offer stroke survivors of working age, post stroke workshops across Surrey and holding local events across Surrey in 2012. If you would like to come along, please contact any one of the Stroke support workers for further information - Elmbridge, Mole Valley & Epsom; Guildford & Waverley; Spelthorne & Runnymede.

Surrey libraries has an extensive programme of Health and well-being events, regularly held throughout the county. Listed below are our upcoming events:
Active Living - Redhill
Active Living is a brand new project aimed at getting young people with a disability or serious health condition engaged in regular sport and exercise. It is funded by a three year grant from Comic Relief and is open to young people aged 16-28. Download an information flyer here (in PDF format).
 
Get Involved in Health Care Education - Guildford
The University of Surrey’s Health and Social Care Division is inviting service users and carers to participate in the preparatory work and then ongoing development of their new graduate pre-registration curriculum. This is a really important opportunity for service users and carers to influence the basic education and training of Health and Social Care professionals.
People can be involved in many different ways and can choose how much to do. The University are holding a number of Focus Groups for people to find out more. They are being held in the Duke of Kent Building at the University from 2 to 4pm on the following dates: 21st June, 19th July, 22nd September and 22nd November.

Guildford Museum
The museum is working hard to make their exhibitions, events and heritage venues accessible. Contact them in advance, or at the time of booking for an event so they can assist you as much as possible in preparation for your visit or for an alternative option. It’s All About You! Redhill
Reigate & Redhill Live at Home Scheme are running a number of free sessions for those over 60 who live in and around Redhill. Each session is themed and a speaker will attend to give information and advice on a range of topics, including Volunteering, the Pension Group, local Social Care, Busses 4 U transport and much more. Free Workshops for Carers
Action for Carers & Employment (ACE) in Surrey is running a series of free workshops tailored to meet the needs of Carers who would like to increase their confidence, or want to improve their IT or administrative skills. In addition, creative workshops are sometimes available. Further details in this PDF document.
 
Health & Well-Being Events - Surrey Libraries (in PDF format)
A series of talks and workshops held at various Surrey libraries during Winter 2010 to Spring 2011. There are a number of workshops covering such topics on self-esteem, assertiveness, depression and caring.
 
Mental Health Stakeholder Meetings
People who use mental health services and their carers in Surrey are invited to attend, expenses paid, a meeting of their nearest mental health stakeholder group and help to improve and develop mental health services locally and across Surrey. Meetings will be held throughout the rest of the year. Face 2 Face - Parents Supporting Parents
At Face 2 Face parents who have a child with a disability themselves have formed a network of friendship and support for other parents and carers. Meets every Friday during term time from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Reigate and Redhill YMCA, Redhill and Brooklands School, Reigate. Orpheus Centre Learning Programme
The Orpheus Centre helps young disabled people learn independence skills through the performing arts.
 
Courses and Workshops at Rendezvous
A wide range of activities and opportunities for people with physical disabilities and for carers at Rendezvous, White Lodge Centre, Holloway Hill, Chertsey.
These include IT, IT Workshops, Leisure and Life Skills, Health and Fitness, Complementary Therapies, Digital Photography and Creative Arts Workshops.

Headway Surrey Drop Ins
Headway Surrey has a new DROP IN for anyone affected by Head Injury every Wednesday from 11 am to 3pm at Rendezvous, White Lodge Centre, Holloway Hill, Chertsey, KT16 OAE
Headway Surrey are also still running their DROP IN in Guildford every Friday from 10.30am to 3pm, at their temporary centre at 7 Faraday Road, off Woodbridge Road, Guildford GU1 1EA.

Level 2 Sports Leadership Qualification
In partnership with Dering, YMCA Redhill is offering to anyone who classifies themselves in any way disabled (including deaf) free 5 day training courses to obtain a Level 2 Sports Leadership Qualification. The programme includes Certified First Aid and /or Level 1 or 2 in a chosen sport, plus support finding volunteer placements and work to put the new skills into practice after the course. Completion will result in recognized and respected qualifications that will enable participants to go on to take further training in order to develop a career in sport. Queen Elizabeth's Foundation Vocational Services
Based in Leatherhead, Surrey, it provides training on sustainable employment for adults with disabilities, especially those who have been forced to change their career direction through accident or illness. The College offers a range of 12 courses in a range of business, trade and technical subjects, each focused on a job market and leading to a specific qualification.

Events for Carers
These are a selection of events that Action for Carers are providing to carers and people who work with carers within Surrey. There are many other events which take place in Surrey which carers can take part in.
 
Expert Patients Programme
If you live with a long-term illness, why not take control by becoming an Expert Patient? The Expert Patients Programme is a self-management course giving people the confidence, skills and knowledge to manage their condition better and be more in control of their lives. This is a national programme but there are some courses held in Surrey.
 
YNot? Drop-in
YNot? Drop-in is a service for Young People aged 16 to 25 who may be experiencing barriers to learning and are not in Education, Employment or Training. YNot? Drop-in provides a relaxed and informal atmosphere where Young People, Professionals, Parents, Carers and Personal Assistants are all welcome to attend. Held at the Woking YMCA between 12.30pm - 2.30pm every Monday.
