Activities for Young People
In Surrey there are activities for most age groups, ranging from pre-school to older children and young people. Some schemes are only run in term time or in school holidays & may be for a particular age group or geographic area. SID has information on these.
Borough or district councils have information on leisure & sport activities in their areas. The sport & leisure officer can advise. Most areas have a sports & leisure centre and/or swimming pool offering activities and facilities which may be suitable for disabled children and young people (eg swimming classes, gymnastics etc), but provision varies across the county.
Surrey Children's Information Service is run by Surrey County Council and can give information on child care for children up to age 14, including childminders, nurseries, services for disabled children, after school clubs & play schemes.
Disability Challengers run a range of play & leisure schemes in Surrey throughout the year for disabled children and young people age 0-25.
Link Leisure runs a variety of sports and leisure activities for children & young adults with learning disabilities in Woking & Surrey Heath.
Mencap East Surrey Leisure Service, 01737 225368, runs leisure activities for young people with learning disabilities in the east of the county.
Parity for Disability based in Camberley and Farnborough run a music therapy service, holiday activity schemes for teenagers & day services for people age 18+.
White Lodge provides services for children and young people who have a wide range of physical and learning disabilities. Opportunities include play and youth schemes.
Sculpt It, 01483 419719, run art based holiday workshops for disabled children.
Thames Valley Adventure Playground in Maidenhead, Berkshire provides safe but adventurous outdoor play activities for disabled children and adults.
Thomley Activity Centre in Buckinghamshire is an activity centre for children and young adults with disabilities and/or specific needs.
Redhill & Reigate YMCA has sport and leisure activities suitable for disabled children and young people.
Horley Saturday Play Scheme is for children with learning disabilities age 5-11 & while the Saturday Group is for young people 12-18 with learning disabilities. A youth group meets on Tuesdays for young people age 13-18. Telephone 01737 225902.
The National Association of Toy & Leisure Libraries can tell you where to find the nearest toy library to borrow good quality toys and equipment.
Cranleigh Leisure Centre has a soft play area exclusively for the use of children with special needs every Sunday from 5-6pm.
The Harrier Centre, 0208 786 8786, in Epsom have a fully supervised soft play area for toddlers upwards.
The Guide Association has groups around the county for girls age 5-18 as do the Scout Association for boys age 5 -18.
PHAB have several clubs in Surrey for physically disabled people and non disabled young people.
